Teaching assistants who have more experience and want to take the next step in their career could:

 

  • Take a further qualification which will help you to move up the ladder. For example, you might try a HLTA qualification, or you may be interested in becoming a specialist in a particular curriculum/SEND area – such as taking a BSL course, or a SENCO qualification.
  • Broaden your experience by working in different environments. For example, if you’ve been working in an MLD school, you might try a PMLD school to broaden your skill-set and make yourself a more rounded education professional.
  • Consider teacher training – there is still a major shortage of teaching staff in our sector, and many schools may support you to do an “on the job” training course if you can’t afford to go back to full-time study.
