The benefits of craft for children with SEND

SEND Jobs Axcis

Doing craft activities can be beneficial for children with SEND

There are many benefits of doing craft activities with children who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). For example, fine motor coordination gets a good work out. In order to draw shapes and cut patterns children are required to use their fine motor coordination. These skills similarly translate to other areas of their lives, such as dressing and eating. Patience is also a skill which many of us lack in the modern world. Crafts that require drying require waiting!  This is a great lesson for your class to demonstrate self control and patience. Also – as things might not go exactly as we hoped, crafts are a great way to promote flexibility. There is no right or wrong way in exploring one’s own creativity! Crafts can also be a fantastic self-esteem booster. Although we want to challenge our kids, it is also important to initially choose arts and crafts that are at an appropriate skill level. Completing the crafts successfully will give students a great sense of accomplishment and pride. Plus, crafting is FUN! And it gives children something pretty to take home and show their parents.

Christmas bauble projects

These lovely acrylic spheres offer boundless opportunity for transformation into beautiful Christmas tree decorations.

The beauty of these clear acrylic baubles is that they are an extremely flexible base from which you can start your Christmas crafting project. Class differentiation is easy to promote through ability and outcome as these baubles could simply be filled with coloured paper and clipped shut, or they could be filled with a Christmas scene, using polystyrene balls as snow to create miniature snow globes for your Christmas tree. The exterior of the balls could be sprayed with a stencil or simply left plain. Photos of family or pets could be put inside. The possibilities are endless, and that’s what is lovely about this project. No matter how able the student, the end result will be that everyone has a decoration which will be able to be put to use once they get home.
