Want to know what it’s like to work for Axcis? We’ve invited some of our contractors to write a blog for us. This week’s article comes from Sarah Russell who works for our Midlands (Birmingham) Office. Sarah is a teacher who has made the transition from mainstream to SEND with Axcis – and this is what she has to say about the experience…

I first discovered Axcis when looking for a suitable supply agency to join. After over 17 years in mainstream teaching, I wanted to focus on working with children with special needs having had past experience of this during my career. I searched online to find a plethora of supply agencies but was really interested to discover that Axcis was a specialist in SEND recruitment. Wanting to obtain varied SEND experience, I thought Axcis would be an ideal agency to approach.

The decision to join Axcis is honestly the best move I’ve made recently career-wise. The work has equipped me with so much experience, which will stand me in good stead for any future teaching I do.

I contacted the Midlands office about registering and spoke to the manager Steph who was very friendly and put me at ease. She organised a date for interview and explained all I needed to know about joining Axcis. I met Steph a few weeks later for interview (which was very much an informal chat) to discuss my past experience and what work I would be looking for with the agency. Various forms and my DBS update were sorted efficiently by Lydia, (another really friendly member of Axcis). Post interview, Lydia was also key in chasing my references and other important information needed to complete the registration process in order to start teaching. This was all handled very efficiently which was much appreciated on my behalf.

Once ready to start placements, I spoke to Steph about suggested schools. She readily recommended a special school in Stourbridge who were looking for cover. Soon after, I was booked for a day (last October) with Steph reassuring me that, “Everyone loves this school!” She wasn’t wrong! Since that first day, I have absolutely loved working there. Luckily, after an initial few weeks, I was offered long-term cover of three months full-time work, which I readily snapped up! It really is an amazing school with wonderful staff and pupils.

I’ve learned so much from my experience so far – mainly strategies used to get the best from lower ability children with quite severe learning difficulties. I have particularly enjoyed working with the older pupils in year 9 to 11 where I was able to focus some of my teaching time on an extended art project (see photos). In turn, this gave me further experience of completing OCR exam assessments, which enabled year 11 pupils to gain accreditation for this work. The staff have really made me feel part of their team, involving me in all aspects of school life and in social events too! I feel very privileged to be working in such a positive learning environment and really look forward to continuing my work there over the next year.

Staff at Axcis are a lovely group of people, always willing to help in a friendly, efficient way. I was apprehensive about joining an agency but from the very first phone call I made, to any I make now, the team are always cheerful and a pleasure to speak to. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them as an agency to both teachers and TAs alike.

Thank you to everyone at Axcis for your continued high quality level of service.

Sarah Russell
