On Thursday the 26th March, Axcis London hosted an Autism Awareness Seminar, featuring the lovely Robyn Steward. The evening was a great success and many candidates left feeling enthusiastic and positive about supporting those with the condition in the classroom.
What better time to run an Autism Awareness Seminar than the day before World Autism Awareness Week starts? The seminar gave Axcis candidates the opportunity to develop their understanding of autism and how they can best support those with the condition in the classroom. Robyn Steward, who is on the spectrum herself, talked candidly about her background and how she came to be where she is now. Although she had a difficult childhood, Robyn uses her life experiences to really bring a powerful element to her seminars. At Axcis, we have worked with Robyn for a number of years and hope to continue to do so in the future.
Candidates were provided with some essential background information on autism and the triad of impairments before Robyn moved on to give some useful strategies for supporting children in the classroom. Although, she does make it clear from the start that; once you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism. This is because, just as all people are different, so are all people with autism and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to providing support. However, there are some useful tools and strategies that can be helpful across the board.
Robyn has recently launched her book, which is available to win in the Axcis March competition. To see details, check out this article. She can also be seen speaking at many NAS events. As a key sponsor of the National Autistic Society, at Axcis we are proud of our affiliation with a charity which does such fantastic and worthwhile work.
What other training does Axcis offer?
At Axcis, we take candidate CPD training seriously. We know that permanent staff in schools are given a legal minimum amount of continual professional development seminars and courses. Unfortunately there is no such legal requirement in the supply industry. However, at Axcis we feel that there should be! That’s why we try to offer a broad range of useful training courses to our candidates which can help to bolster skills and experience on their CV and help them to develop key skills for use in their careers. To see what other courses we have coming up, check out the Axcis Events Diary.
